There are many places around the globe where climate is conducive to atmospheric icing during the winter season. This may lead to a difficult environment for people and facilities. The cold climate causes various problems for Nordic companies and organizations. Wintertime icing causes systems to function either abnormally or not at all. This in turn might cause increased operating and maintenance expenses. So far, there is no overall structure working to solve problems related to wintertime icing in the concerned region. As a result, the problem solving strategy is limited. Furthermore, recent progress within related research has not been fully implemented in the industry.
This was our first project. In this project we provided open source atmospheric icing model to Lulea University of Technology. This model was used in Weather Research and Forecasting 'WRF' - Python. We also collaborated with Foreca Ltd. and Novia University of Applied Sciences to select icing sensors for off shore platforms. We were also part of business consortium of NoICE in Botnia-Atlantica region.
